Brown Institute for Brain Science

Mahoney Pilot Research Awards

The Brown Institute for Brain Science (BIBS) is now accepting applications on a rolling basis for Pilot Research Awards. BIBS will award Pilot Research Awards to support risky, innovative projects in interdisciplinary brain science. Awards typically range from $5,000 to $15,000 for one year, and will be awarded based on impartial reviews of research proposals. BIBS pilot grants are supported by the David Mahoney Flexible Research Fund.

Proposals must clearly describe the interdisciplinary nature of the research project. Eligible projects must involve two or more disparate disciplines, preferably linking the life sciences (molecular, cellular, systems, or behavioral) and the physical sciences (mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry or engineering). Projects that expand the research training and expertise of students into an interdisciplinary arena are especially encouraged. Simple statistical analyses, pure modeling in the absence of biological data, or survey-based studies are not eligible for this funding mechanism. Pilot research projects must ultimately lead to submission of proposals for external research funding.

Funding should be used primarily to support supplies, equipment, and non-faculty salaries. Awards may not be used entirely for technician support.

Pilot research projects must be sponsored or led by an affiliated faculty member of the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

The proposal must include the following:

• The title of the project

• The specific aim(s) of the project

• A one-page project description, including explanations of the relationship to BIBS' goals and core research areas, the interdisciplinary nature of the project, and explicit plans to submit an external grant proposal based on the pilot project's results

• An itemized budget

• Biographical sketches for project leaders and key individuals (NIH or NSF style)

Applications for Brown Institute for Brain Science Pilot Research Awards will be accepted on a rolling basis. Submit application materials to BrainScience@brown.edu. Please use the subject line "Brain Science Pilot Research Award Application” when you submit your application.
